The square-jawed star of Mad Men has become a men’s style icon by default and the embodiment of retro masculinity by mistake. Not that Jon Hamm’s American story is any less compelling than that of the man he plays on TV. Just that he’s a much nicer guy in real life.
He didn’t even rate Mad Men when he got the script through. “I remember picking it up. Mad Men: sh**** title. AMC: network no-one’s ever heard of. Two strikes. Then I read it. I said to her (girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt), “This is the best pilot I’ve ever read in my life.’”
As for the whole Don Draper phenomenon, the man himself is not impressed.
“There is no Don Draper,” he says. “Don Draper was blown up in a ditch in Korea. That whole ‘Be Don Draper’ thing, I feel it’s… sad. This is a fundamentally f**ked up human being.”
So he’s not the type to mope broodily on his own in dingy bars, staring into empty whisky glasses.
“There’s a lot of talk about, ‘Oooh, you’re so sexy!’ If people put that mantle on you, fine, but you take it with a wink and a pinch of salt.
“At 41 I’m like, give me a break, man, I’m no Ryan Gosling. And that’s fine. I don’t aspire to be that. That’s not my jam.”

Jon Hamm is featured in the March 2012 issue of Esquire.
In the issue Jon talks about being the voiceover for Mercedes-Benz’s S400 Hybrid ad campaign:
“I drove a lot of lousy cars in my day. I’m happy to be working with a [Mercedes] company like this, where all they care about is excellence. I’m a company guy. Good company, too.”
He also talks connecting with his Mad Men character Don Draper:
“I think the sort of ‘misplaced childhood’ sense is probably the only thing about ‘Don Draper’ that I do have in common. I can’t really delve too deeply into the psychoanalysis of it, as I would be underqualified and oversharing, but I suppose that sensibility resonated at some point during the audition process, and may lend the character or my portrayal thereof some deeper meaning. Wholly unconsciously on my part.”
Mad Men‘s season premiere airs March 25 on AMC. Hamm will make his directorial debut in the show’s second episode airing April 1!

Mad Men star Jon Hamm is featured in Gotham Magazine‘s October 2010 issue.
In the issue Jon talks about his hair:
“My hair is an ongoing source of embarrassment. I’ve never had a good hairstyle, so the fact that my job has me in what amounts to a hair helmet is pretty great for me.”
He also talks about playing baseball:
“Baseball is one of those things that requires a very specific skill set, and it gets harder and harder the older you get to find people who have those specific skills and want to put their knees, backs, elbows and shoulders in mortal danger every Sunday. But weirdly enough, I got cold-called, or whatever the e-mail version of cold-called is, by Ben Affleck’s brother, Casey, who was putting together a team and asked if I was interested. I was like, Absolutely! I have no fear of looking like an idiot.”
