Dame Judi Dench was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and it can lead to blindness, reports BBC.

She recently issued a statement via Reuters about her condition:

“In response to the numerous articles in the media concerning my eye condition – macular degeneration – I do not wish for this to be overblown,” Dench said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

“This condition is something that thousands and thousands of people all over the world are having to contend with. It’s something that I have learnt to cope with and adapt to – and it will not lead to blindness.”

Dench recently spoke with UK’s Daily Mirror about her condition:

Dame Judi, who is due to reprise the role of M in the 23rd James Bond film, Skyfall, told the Mirror: “I can’t read scripts any more before because of the trouble with my eyes and so somebody comes and reads them to me, like telling me a story.”

Dench confirmed that her condition will not slow her down. “You get used to it. I’ve got lenses and glasses and things and very bright light helps.”

Dench has two new films releasing in 2012: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (February 24) and Skyfall (October 26).
